ITSSL warns about a CYBER ATTACK
Information Technology Society of Sri Lanka (ITSSL) issued a
statement; warning the public about possible cyberattacks during the
Coronavirus pandemic.
ITSSL chairman, Rajeev Yasiru Mathews informed that an
increment of cyber-attacks using the COVID-19 situation can be seen these
days. A leading cybersecurity institute was able to identify more than 40,000
COVID-19 situation related to cyber threats worldwide. These identified unsafe websites
were designed to retrieve personal data and saved passwords from users and are
able to install malware programs into end-user devices.
These type of cyber-crimes shows a significant increment in Sri Lanka. ITSSL had already received several complaints about websites, attempting
to obtain personal data from users by using false information about give always
and free distributions of highly demanded goods such as face masks and hand
sanitizers.
Also, an email headlined as “free COVID-19 testing” was
identified as an attempt to installing a malicious software named Trickbot into
the receiver’s devices. ITSSL urges the public not to open these types of
harmful emails and messages.
