Iranian missile hits their own Warship, Killing 19 sailors
A 'friendly fire' incident reported today from Iran, as an Iranian warship was accidentally struck by their own missile during an exercise on Sunday. Official reports said that 19 sailors were killed while 15 others were injured in this unfortunate accident. The incident took place near Jask and Chabahar.
In the training event, the support ship Konarak was hit by a new anti-ship missile being tested by the frigate Jamaran. According to Iranian media, The Konarak had been putting targets out in the water and remained too close to one.
The sunk warship, Kenarak (A-1403), was a Hendijan-class auxiliary support vessel armed with 20mm cannon and anti-ship missiles. Vessel's core crew was limited to 15 sailors, many fewer than the reported dead and injured. Kenarak was made in the Netherlands and bought by Iran before the 1979 revolution.
This unfortunate incident sparked uncertainty about the command and control system and professionalism of the Iranian forces as this was not the first time an accident occurred lately. In January, an Iranian air defence system fired at an unidentified target striking down a Ukrainian passenger flight killing all those on board.
