Is Rajapaksa targeting to consolidate power using this election?

As president Rajapaksa facing a fractured opposition in the Sri Lankan Parliament, he wishes to re consolidate power using this General Election 2020.

More than 16 million people are eligible to vote in the 2020 General Election. Polling centers are open from 7.00 AM at Local Time and will be closed by 4.00 PM in the evening (August 5). When considering Parliament Member Seats ,there are 196 directly elected seats in 22 multi-member districts grabs.

And there's still remaining 29 seats will be filled by proportional representation based on the result of Wednesday's poll.

The poll is conducted under the health regulations in order to prevent a possible spread of the Covid-19 disease at any way. Election Commission and the Health Authorities guaranteed the public an "infection-free" poll.
